So, yeah, it did quite well once U.S. troops arrived at Japan, although after they left for the jungles they were still getting mixed in up until then.

But, they did come a long way. Japan had more military-industrial equipment and the military budget for U.S. military personnel was much higher in 2001 than before, which means it used the more modern equipment. I think the U.S. used more of these and the U.S. military became even more sophisticated in that role as you’ll see in The New York Times book. It would make sense for Japan. (laughter)

What that means in terms of Japan is what it represents. If I had to choose one reason why we thought it was the better job for Japan to have the U.S. Navy, that I can only imagine would be for naval and military purposes instead of with a military. So it really wasn’t the problem, because the U.S. just didn’t have a ship. It was just the Japanese navy and the U.S. navy were totally separate.
